Evil in The Picture of Dorian Gray: :: Picture Dorian Gray Essays
Evil in The Picture of Dorian Gray: à à à à à à The Picture Of Dorian Gray is yet another novel portraying evil.à The theme is very much reflected by the book's setting, plot structure and characterisation.à It shows how individuals can slowly deteriorate because of the evil lying within themselves.à The evil of this book is the evil created by one's self and thrusted upon one's self.à The power of greed and selfishness take over Dorian Gray and create an ugly evil side to him. à à à à à à The mid eighteenth century was a very influential era, specially in England.à This period judged much upon appearance and status.à Dorian was a very wealthy, intelligent man with a very high status.à He knew the very influential and rich people in his town as well.à His beauty charmed the world.à Basil was inspired to draw his portrait in order to preserve his beauty and youth. Dorian recognised that as long as he remained young he would be handsome.à He dreaded the day that he would age slightly and start to form wrinkles and such ugly (in Dorian's opinion) ugly things.à He believed that that day would deprive him of triumphs that would result in him being miserable. à à à à à à The degree of evil within Dorian increases as the plot develops.à By trading his soul for his youth, Dorian rids of the good inside of himself.à The plot proves to us that evil does actually lie within an individual.à From the moment that he becomes forever young he begins to deteriorate.à Even once he reached his epiphany and saw his evil through the portrait he simply denied seeing it and continued his malicious deeds. à à à à à à The characterisation of the book is one of the most important elements of this book.à Dorian begins by being a very naà ¯ve lad.à He is very easily influenced by others especially his two new good friends; Basil and Lord Henry. Basil, the painter of the portrait, influenced Dorian in more of a good, honest way.à While Lord Henry, although not being evil himself, gave him a more evil insight on life.à Both of them changed his life forever.à How little they both knew what went on inside that man. à à à à à à Basil does not have any real direct influence on the youngster; without

Wage Discrimination against Women Essay -- Expository Exemplification
à à The Womenââ¬â¢s Equal Rights Movement has made dramatic progress in the last one hundred years. As a result, a woman can now vote, choose almost any career, and defend her human right to happiness. But, in spite of the progress made in the area of equal rights, wage problems in the workplace still exist which deny women equal pay for equal work. à SUCCESSES Women are closing the gender gap in workplace and higher education. They are starting to climb the corporate ladder and are moving into managerial positions. Forty-three percent of managers are women today as opposed to the nineteen percent who were managers in 1970 ("Almost, But Not Quite, Equal" 1). Women are also receiving a higher level of education. They earned forty-five percent of the law degrees in 1994 compared to eight percent in 1972. Education is an important contributing factor to the progress being made in reducing the discrepancy in wages between genders. With women becoming better educated than 20 years ago, potential for a higher salary is greater. Today, women earn fifty percent of all college degrees and forty percent of all medical degrees. It is, perhaps, because of education that womenââ¬â¢s wages grew, on average, twenty percent faster than menââ¬â¢s from 1920-1980 (Clark 174). The situation is not that fewer men have been attending college, but that a gr eater number of women are able, encouraged and willing to take the next step in education than ever before. à PROBLEMS Despite all that has been accomplished, wage equality between men and women has not yet been reached. Overall, women only earn 74% of what men do in America (Equal Pay). In the higher job positions, with higher wages, there is a lack of female presence. An example of ... ... themselves need to realize what can be accomplished and what blocks the way. And then with those complications resolved, women stand a better chance of receiving equal pay for equal work. Works Cited "Across Globe, Women Earn Less." The Des Moines Register 30 July 1996, sec. Many Cultures, One Place #2 :: Essays Papers
Many Cultures, One Place #2 In modern time, numerous people have the idea that all the countries in the world can be united as one. However, they do not comprehend completely that there exists many differences in terms of political and cultural structures that do not allow countries to act as one. In the article: One Europe, Two Citizens by Pavel Kelly-Tychtl, the author tries to make the audience understand that having numerous countries together acting as one, like the European Union EUROPA - The EU at a glance is not the best way possible to solve the problems that our society has because eventually it will generate more because of the huge gap that these countries have in relation to each other. According to the author of this article, the only purpose that the European Union has is to generate discontent between their citizens and also to affect the political and economical structures that have already been created before by those governments. The structure that the European Union has is not the proper system to enforce around countries in the world because it limits the power of each country depending the characteristics that each of them have. The European Union is a group of countries that their main purpose is to act as one nation. With this focus on mind, they want to create between these groups of countries the same qualities and characteristics so that they can have the best governmental system ever (Squeezing 22 ) Among the things that the European Union shares in common are: common currency (Euro), borders (it is easier to pass from one country to another), parliament (same laws or rules) Accessing European Union Information, free trade (safe economy), and so on. In present time, this union is composed of fifteen countries. However, the European Union is looking forward that other countries will join them, and they already invited other ten countries to be with them. Many politicians agree that the European Union is an excellent example of how governments should work because it is very well organized (One Europe 30) However, with the ideas given by the author in this paper the audience can clearly see that the o nly thing that the European Union can produce is differences between people around the world. There exist a similarity between the European Union and the United States; they both are seen as one place, one nation, and one country. The Man Inthe Black Suit – Presence of Evil
Stephen King's ââ¬Å"The Man in the Black Suitâ⬠is a short story that makes us think. Who are we in this world? Is our destiny in our hands or is it already written? Can we avoid being in contact with evil? ââ¬Å"The Man in the Black Suitâ⬠proves that evil is omnipresent in our world and that there is no way to avoid it. It does not matter who you are, where you are and when you are there, if evil wants to meet you, it will wind a way to do so. We would not be shocked so much if an adult has met the Devil, because we all know that adults are more likely to commit sins. But what when a child meet the Devil? What would a child do wrong to be punished by the Devil? It is difficult to say. ââ¬Å".. This is something that happened to me when I was very young, only nine years old. ââ¬Å"(page 821) Our main character Gary was a young child when he saw the Devil for a reason he has never understood ââ¬Å"Until that Saturday in 1914, I had thought that bears were the worst thi ng the forest could hold. ââ¬Å"(page 831) Kids think that bears are the most terrific creatures in the forest. We can see their huge innocence. Why does evil attack those innocent children? Because evil can attack anybody. Our nine-year old character Gary meets the Devil in the town of Motton as he defines like this : ââ¬Å"The town of Motton was a different world in those day ââ¬â more different then I could ever tell you. That was a world without airplanes droning overhead, a world almost without cars. â⬠(page 821) As he talks about Motton, we learn that it is a little rural town in western Maine. There was no phone, no doctors, no paved roads and not more than a dozen of houses. All those little things make Motton a completely innocent place. Why would the Devil attack a little innocent farmer town?It does not seem so attractiveâ⬠¦ But evil does not have any criteria, it is omnipresent. In ââ¬Å"The Man in the Black Suitâ⬠, Gary's meeting with evil happens d uring the summer of 1914. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ one afternoon in the summer of 1914. â⬠(page 821). As we all know, the begging of the 20th century is a very religious period of time in the United States. Also, religion has a lot of power especially in the small rural communities like in the town of Motton. People back then believed in God, and that God will protect them from the Devil if they were good believers. Also the part of pagans was really slim in the society. We could call that period of time an innocent period of time that should have not met the Devil in any case. If the 1910s have not been ââ¬Å"savedâ⬠from evil, how could our generation be? We can see that any period of time can be in contact with evil. In conclusion, we can see that in ââ¬Å"The Man in the Black Suitâ⬠, evil attacks an innocent child, in an innocent place during an innocent period of time. What can we find more innocent than that to avoid evil?. With those three things combined, we can concl ude that there is not a way to avoid evil in our world, it is absolutely omnipresent.

Race and Ethnicity Essay
Throughout the course of this twisted Monopoly, many themes and stereotypes arose to become apparent. However the two main themes that I observed were gender biases and stereotypes involving race and inequality. These two themes became apparent through the traits and personality the players began demonstrating as the game went on. It was obvious that the blue male (which would represent a white male in real life) became greedy and aggressive as he was set up to be successful and of course was. You then see how player three and five become unsuccessful because of how the game is set up. This represents the stereotype of a woman who is considered an inferior. As the game went on these players were very cautious of every decision they made because it was made obvious that each one was indeed very critical to any success they strived to achieve. By the end of the game it was extremely apparent to everyone that certain opportunities were given to certain people in the game. This basically made it impossible for them to lose this game. This theme however then transfers to reality in that the stereo typical white male will usually be given a much better opportunity then say an African American female. The two articles that I chose reflects the two themes of race and gender stereo types and how they correspond with success or opportunities. In the first article, Workplace Gender Bias: Not Just between Strangers, they discuss how there is ââ¬Å"substantial inequalities between genders in the modern workplace and the evidence for stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. â⬠They then also discuss how this concept can then be applied to race or age minorities as well. The article also explains the significant difference in that studies show that there are gender differences in career choices, salary, harassment, etc. This directly relates to our theme in our game in that the money and income the blue male (which represented a white male) was much greater than that of the red female (who could represent a female minority). In addition, the article explains how many women ââ¬Å"face significant challenges in career advancement,â⬠and ââ¬Å"Women are more likely to self-select into less prestigious and lower paying careers compared to men (Konrad, 2003). â⬠There were many similarities between this article and our monopoly game in that stereo types and feminization of women occur and are apparent in real life just like our game. It is similar in that just like how the article describes and how it is true in society, women are treated as inferior in our game. Because in society women are stereotyped and made the inferior. Like in the game, in real life a women of a minority will struggle so much more to become successful making every decision critical because of the way they are viewed in society. It is also relative in that this is to be true not only for just women, but for race and other minorities of society as well. In society and in the game, these people are not given as good of opportunities as the superior and it is much more difficult to succeed. There is a direct correlation between what is described in the article and what happened in the game. In conclusion, this article relates to one of the themes of our game in that there is gender inequality in reality and the male is more likely to succeed with a higher income and greater opportunity. Within the second article, Racial Mismatch in the Classroom: Beyond Black-White Differences, demonstrates our theme of race inequality. The main point the article is trying to show is that research shows that when the teacher is of the same race or ethnicity of the student, they receive more positive and helpful instruction than if the student is of a different race or ethnicity of the teacher. The research and analysis was mostly based on black and white subjects however. This article not only can relate to just race, but also class, gender, background, IQ, and other factors like we would see in our game. The second article directly corresponds with our game and our other theme in that people of different race are given different opportunity to succeed in life quite often and are stereotyped as well. We see that a white student with a white teacher would be getting a 1 / 2.better education which then sets them up in that they are more likely to succeed in life than the black student. In our game we see that the player who represents our white male is set up to succeed, while our player who represents a minority is set up to fail. This is similar to our game because certain people would work well together and bargain, while some people were just cast aside or not even given the opportunity to bargain because of the unfortunate circumstances they were under. Both of these articles relate to our game in that they represent the opportunities and stereo types ofà not only race and class, but gender as well. These stereotypes are also apparent and can be true in reality also. So we see that the changes made in our monopoly game, and the articles found, directly relate to real life and how society works. Although it may be harsh, it is true and can be proven by not many studies and articles, but our twisted monopoly game as well that certain people (like the white male) are going to succeed much more often than someone like a black female. There are these stereotypes because in reality a majority of people fit into them. They fit into them not in the way people normally believe they do, but because society and the superior have created them. That then changes the opportunities in life and the circumstances in which they are under. Works Cited Nadler, J. T. , & Stockdale, M. S. (2012). Workplace Gender Bias: Not Just Between Strangers. It works by shining a light through the babyââ¬â¢s hand or foot RADIANT WARMERS used for very unstable or extremely premature newborns â⬠¢ RESPIRATOR OR VENTILATORà used to help the baby breathe. These machines are attached to an ETT. â⬠¢ TEMPERATURE PROBE â⬠¢ UMBILICAL ARTERIAL CATHETER (UAC) OR UMBILICAL VENOUS CATHETER (UVC)- catheter is placed in the artery or vein at the stump of the umbilical cord. Itââ¬â¢s used to give the medications, fluids, and nutrition. Itââ¬â¢s also used to draw blood for lab tests. WEIGHING SCALE COMMON NICU TESTS: â⬠¢ help determine the neonateââ¬â¢s problems and how they should be treated â⬠¢ monitor newbornââ¬â¢s progress. If the neonate needs a major test, the doctor will ask the parents or legal guardian to sign a consent form before the test is done. BLOOD TESTS-provide crucial information on the potential and present problems of the neonate â⬠¢ Bilirubin levels, blood sugar, blood chemistry, electrolytes, CBC, blood C/S, blood gas COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CAT OR CT SCAN)-produce a more precise image of tissue than an X-ray or ultrasound examination.ECHOCARDIOGRAM- detects structural problems (heart defects) and problems with how the heart works. HEARING TEST-A tiny earphone will be placed in her ear to deliver sound. Small sensors, which are taped to the baby's head, will relay information to a machine that measures the electrical activity in her brain in response to sound. MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI)-The MRI gives a more detailed view than a CT scan NEWBORN SCREENING TEST- tests babies for serious hereditary disorders.RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY (ROP) EXAMINATION-This test usually is done for newborns born at or before 28 weeks of gestation or weighing less than 1,500 grams (3 1/3 pounds). The test is generally performed about 4 to 6 weeks after birth, or when your newborn reaches 31 to 33 weeks gestational age (weeks since the mother's last menstrual period). ULTRASO UND-routine test to diagnose bleeding in the brain. URINE TESTS- determine how well the kidneys are functioning, and whether neonate has an infection.WEIGHING-routine exam, especially for premature and low birth weight newborns X-RAYS- provide pictures of neonateââ¬â¢s lungs and other internal organs. NURSING CARE PLAN: 1. Hyperthermia NDx:à Hyperthermia related to inflammatory process/ hypermetabolic state as evidenced by an increase in body temperature, warm skin and tachycardia 2. Fluid Volume Deficit NDx:à Fluid volume deficit related to failure of regulatory mechanism |Bucayu, Michael | |Cabulay, Lei-Ann Jessica | |Rodriguez, Kristel Angela | |Talosig, Janica Marie |
